Identifying Local Opportunities

DISH, WINK remain at odds
http://infoweb.newsbank.com/resources/doc/nb/news/15A82F30ACCD5C40?p=AWNB

The local CBS affiliate for Southwest Florida is in a contract dispute with the television provider, DISH. The people at WINK don't think DISH is offering enough money to allow WINK to broadcast over their service, because they are offering less than all other providers. This has resulted in a blackout of the channel to DISH customers in the area since January 8th.

The problem in this article is that customers of DISH can't view their normal CBS programs because of the contract dispute. The customers are the ones that are losing the most because they are paying for the TV service but if they can't watch CBS shows. This could also lead to the customers finding a new provider and thus losing DISH money, therefore they are also affected by this contract dispute.

Does law require directors be full-time residents?

In this article there are several issues that people are asking about to a group of lawyers from a local firm. They are asking certain questions that pertain to the Florida community association laws. The answers to these questions are addressed but the article itself provides a perspective of how things can worry residents or bother them.

The biggest problem which I believe to be the one in the title is whether or not the head of a community association has to be a full-time resident, which is a large issue because in Southwest Florida most condominium complexes are primarily comprised of snowbirds. This issue is felt by the residents of the communities because they need to know who to vote for to be their voice and leader for the community association.

Naples candidates differ over commercial flights at airport
http://infoweb.newsbank.com/resources/doc/nb/news/15A8DD9E2F4F9A50?p=AWNB

The small local airport in Naples has signed a deal with a commercial airline that will service a twice a week flight to Newark, New Jersey. This has caused some uproar because many don't feel that it's necessary, leading the issue to be a hot topic of debate for the mayoral and city counsel candidates.

The issue here is that many people don't believe the airport was transparent when making this deal and question whether the residents truly wanted this to happen. There is also the issue of noise that will come from the planes as they come and go. These issues directly affect the residents of Naples because they are the ones that will deal with the noise as well as the mayoral candidates because whether they address this question correctly may cost them the election.

Measure to override fracking bans advances
http://infoweb.newsbank.com/resources/doc/nb/news/15A88712B1F41218?p=AWNB

A bill that would override any local ordinances against fracking was passed to appear at the Florida Senate floor. It will allow drilling companies the opportunity to establish themselves while the local governments file a complaint as to why they don't want drilling to occur.

The issue at hand with this bill passing is that fracking will become harder to fight. There are severe concerns among local governments as to the environmental issues that can come with fracking. The fracking will affect residents of the areas that are being drilled because they will constantly see the rigs, and they may also have to deal with any environmental issues that occur.

Proposed high-rise condos draw more criticism from Lee residents
http://infoweb.newsbank.com/resources/doc/nb/news/15A82F3154373390?p=AWNB

There is a proposal for high-rise condos to be built along a golf course in Bonita Springs. The residents of this area don't believe that it would be smart to build these condos and have voiced their concerns. The proposal still has to go through several more city reviews and the residents' concerns will be factored in to the final decision.

The issue here is that residents believe there will be too much traffic on a two lane road both during and after the construction takes place. They are the ones that will be inconvenienced by this because they are the ones that will be driving the road.

  1. You put together a great list of opportunities, Dylan. It’s cool because we live close (Fort Myers) so I am aware of a lot of the opportunities you posted. I believe I used the Naples News. I’m not a big fan of the News-Press. I actually have a friend in town that has DISH and he is unable to watch CBS. It stinks for him as he is a huge Gator fan and missed a lot of games broadcasted on CBS (Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama).

  2. Hello Dylan,

The articles you listed are very interesting. I enjoyed reading the article regarding high-rise condos. Although for developers, this may seem like a money pit, I can also understand the opinions of the residents in regards to the increase in traffic. I also enjoyed reading the article discussing if directors must be full-time residents. I live in South Florida and am aware that many apartment buildings house snowbirds, yet I feel that someone who is in charge of making decisions for their building should be a full-time resident so that he/she is readily available to make those decisions.

  3. Wow Dylan, what a great list of local opportunities, you are a smart guy. I’m from Miami and there are high-rise buildings everywhere, which causes increased traffic and can really inconvenience some people. So I can sympathize with those who are criticizing the proposed high-rise buildings. The high rise building can also benefit the residents though because more jobs would be created.
